Inspiration: a body in a body

The building of former student’s hall we regard as a quality architecture of the 80’s. That is why we tried in our design for conversion to a school to use existing spaces, materials and structures as much as possible. The principle idea of the whole design and at the same time almost the only construction intervention is placing of a new volume containing an auditorium, lecture halls, a library and a school chapel into the sole core of the building. This element creates a new heart of the building and brings light and air into its depth. Through a roof skylight and a system of diffusers the daylight enters the auditorium space for 300 students. At both sides of the auditorium the light is further distributed into lecture halls and lounges via a big reflecting surface. Each space has a contact to daylight even if it is positioned very deep in the building. At each level there are teacher offices and classrooms located by windows. Views into these rooms could be adjusted or limited by opaque curtains.
